May Newsletter 2022

seanduregger.substack.com

It feels like it’s been a while since I’ve had any sense of organization in regards to my audiobook narration and creative endeavors. In fact, “The COVID Years” (as I’ll forever dub 2020-2022) have been full of highs and lows. It’s been a whirlwind. If you’ve stayed with me for the past couple years, THANK YOU. If you’re new to me and my audiobook narration…WELCOME! We’re going to have some fun.

This is my first official Newsletter since getting organized. And a TON has been going on. I’ll try to be brief as well as somewhat interesting.

Audiobook Narration

I’m still very much trucking along with my narration. I feel like I’ve slowed down a tad, but I also feel like I’m a “real” narrator now. My projects get better and better, I’m honing in my craft, and I feel I have settled into my “brand” and have found my voice in many ways.

Here are the last two audiobooks that have been published:

The Hand Of God

G. S. Scott continues his Chaos Reigns Trilogy with Book Two: The Hand Of God. What’s been interesting about this series is that it is definitely outside my comfort zone. I’m a “horror guy” and tend to feel very comfortable narrating that genre. Fantasy and especially Dark Fantasy has been a wonderful challenge as a narrator. So many characters! So many story threads! I cannot wait for you all to hear Book 3, The Tower Of Time. All these things come together in very satisfying way.

Killer Flies

The infamous 1983 paperback novel finally comes to audiobook! Killer Flies has been a collectors item and sought after by Horror Paperback collectors for years. Boasting collectors prices of over $300 for years, Encyclopocalypse Publications burst the collector’s bubble by republishing Killer Flies back in 2020. In fact, I helped with this acquisition. Through some research, I discovered that “Mark Kendall” was a pseudonym of Melinda Snodgrass (Writer for Star Trek: TNG as well as the Imperials book series). So, I dropped her a line and she allowed us to republish this crazy novel she wrote for a mortgage payment for Signet’s “Animals Attack” series of books.

Coming Soon:

The Final Gate by Wesley Southard and Lucas Mangum [Encyclopocalypse Publications]

The Honey Trap by Patrick Sheane Duncan, co-narrated with Felicia Day [Encyclopocalypse Publications]

Encyclopocalypse Publications

Over the past few years, I’ve been getting more and more involved with the publisher Encyclopcalypse Publications. Mark Alan Miller’s company began in 2018 and Mark and I became fast friends when I narrated Gary Brandner’s The Brain Eaters.

I don’t have an “official” title as of now, but I’ve been helping in a marketing, casting audiobooks, on-boarding new authors, and being the main point-of-contact for the company for acquisitions of out-of-print titles.

It’s been an amazing time learning the business of publishing and Encyclopocalypse Publications is just getting started.

Recent books I’ve been a part of publishing have been:

  • Glenn Rolfe’s The Haunted Halls, Something In The Groove, and Nocturnal Pursuits (all 3 are available now!)

  • James Newman’s Ride or Die plus 5 projects yet to be announced (Ride or Die is out now)

  • Joshua Millican’s upcoming debut Deeper Than Hell (available for pre-order)

  • Wile E. Young and Emily Young’s upcoming Dust Bowl Children (available for pre-order)

  • Robert Essig’s Circus Oasis and Mojave Mud Caves (in production)

  • Kristal Stittle’s Yellow Line (out now!)

  • and more authors and titles yet to be announced

Sean Duregger…The Author

Yes, I’m writing a book. TWO BOOKS, actually. I’m not at a point to divulge too much information just yet, but I’m very excited about these stories and their characters. At this point I’ve planned the first 2 books in a episodic series in the vein of The Hardy Boys…but very much in the Horror. Think Goonies meets The Lost Boys and you’ll get the vibe I’m trying to bring to these.

The plan is to have the first draft for Book One done by December and then I’ll head into 2023 with an official timeline. Hopefully you’ll have a paperback in your hands by Summer 2023 with Book 2 on the way by December 2023.

What I’m Reading/Listening To

Clickers by J. F. Gonzalez and Mark Williams

A blast of a creature feature book. I listened to the audiobook version narrated by Chet Williamson. This is a bonkers book full of insane creatures, profanity, and plenty of gore!

Clickers II: The Next Wave by J. F. Gonzalez and Brian Keene

Like most sequels, this is bigger…MUCH bigger than Clickers. Again, I “read” via audiobook and Chet Williamson delivers in spades. I still prefer the first book…but about to move on to Clickers III!

Sausages by Janine Pipe

I’ve always like the IDEA of “Making Of” books but they’ve always been such dry reading. It seems like Janine Pipe felt the same way. Here, we get a very personal look into the making of Dog Soldiers through the eyes of a fan of the film. Janine had access to Neil Marshall and almost EVERYONE involved with the film. A breath of fresh air and a very fun read. Now I need to dig out my DVD of the film and give it another watch.

THE DEATH OF PEACE OF MIND by Bad Omens

I cannot get enough of this album or this band.

That’s all the news I can think of reporting at this time. This has been a really crazy yet rewarding couple of years and I’m really excited for what the future has in store. Thanks for sticking around and reading this, I’ll talk to all of you next month!

All the best,

A very fun and informative newsletter. I wasn’t familiar with your work before, Sean, but I’m looking forward to giving it a listen, and reading your literary work when it becomes available. A big thanks to Robert Essig for recommending this newsletter to me!
